Is there a difference between an overbite and an overjet?
Two of the most prevalent orthodontic problems are overbites and overjets. Both phrases are sometimes used interchangeably. However, there are significant distinctions between the two situations that should be considered.
Overbite
While your upper front teeth cover one-third of your lower incisors when your jaw is closed, you have an overbite, also known as a deep bite. Horizontal overjets don't have the same verticality as this problem.
Overjet
Overjet occurs when the upper front teeth protrude beyond the lower front teeth, generating a substantial horizontal overlap. When you close your mouth, it's natural for your upper front teeth to rest slightly in front of your bottom teeth. However, any separation of more than 2 millimeters will create problems.
Overjets cause the top teeth to protrude at an angle beyond the lower teeth, while overbites are vertical. Conversely, overbite causes the teeth to face downward or straight (not on an angle).
